I made this century during springtime. To be more precise, it is in between a metric century ride and a classic century, but any way you slice this, with its 140 km, this ride is a respectable one. Almost completely flat, the whole trip is of an astounding beauty. Passing through the biosphere of a Unesco natural reserve, the roads of the Pianura Pontina are almost desert during springtime. Lakes, seashore, countryside and the forest are the ingredients of a perfect travel through primeval nature.
You’ll be constantly under the impression you’re a survivor in an abandoned wild world. Pedaling through these roads it’s an experience difficult to forget, it is just the quintessential of road cycling. Really. Tremendous nature, no cars as far as the eye can see, silence, often good weather: this is the Circeo’s Natural Sanctuary.
Total climbing: 1616 m
Average speed: 25.19 km/h
Roads near Sabaudia, a dream made of silence, absence of humans and cars, beauty.
The lake of Paola side to the seashore inside the perimeter of the biosphere. The Mount Circeo is barely visible under the clouds in the background
Circeo’s beaches mean kilometers of abandoned beaches made of wild dunes and scented maquis shrubland
Roads like this are a gorgeous dream for any cyclist. No cars as far as the eye can see. A word of caution is needed about the wind: these roads develop along the seashore and you can easily find yourself battling the wind blowing on your face. Just study the dominant winds (Libeccio, Scirocco, Maestrale) to, instead, take advantage of them!
Jurassic Park is here. See that T-rex posing for the camera?
Daisies rise from the sand. Better not to touch anything that is beyond the tip of your nose. It’s a biosphere reserve here. Respect mother nature that gave you birth.
Another peaceful lake (Fogliano’s lake).
